Its just one week into the New Year, and we already have had enough of ‘surprises’. The 17th year of the Twentieth Century has witnessed some of the events that took everyone, not only in India but also the world by surprise. To start with, the first day of the year came up with the news of mass molestation of women that took place at the IT capital of the nation, Bengaluru. This shameful incident occurred on the last evening of 2016. A group of merely 100 drunk men molested, grappled, and abused several women who were present at the MG Road to welcome the New Year. 1500 policemen who were deployed stood numb and took no action against the hooligans. This is one such incidence, which raises the question of security of women in our country. Can’t the women of our country just walk around freely? When will such crimes stop? On the same night, around 2 AM, one more woman was targeted by bike-riders. The most shocking thing is that she was being stalked by these bikers for quite some time. When she entered her society premises, one of the two bikers caught her and was dragged till she reached near to the stationed bike. The man on the bike, grappled her and then thrashed her on the streets and disappeared into the night darkness. Are the women not safe nearer to their homes even? Another news that took everyone by surprise was the stepping down of Mahendra Singh Dhoni from captaincy of limited overs format. It came as a shockwave to the entire sporting world. He is considered to be one of the most successful captains that the game has ever produced. Everyone was shocked because he had some major tasks in the coming future. Firstly, he was to defend the Champions Trophy that he had won 4 years back by defeating the hosts, England in their own backyard. Everyone expected that Dhoni might lead the team for the third time in the World Cup in 2019. When Dhoni hung his boots from the test side, his successor Virat Kohli has done a tremendous job. Under his captaincy, the team has achieved some fantastic results which include becoming the Number 1 Test team and also a team which remained unbeaten in the year gone by. Now with MSD stepping down, the big question arises- whether Virat Kohli would be able to re-create the magic and maintain the same temperament that MSD had while leading the side in all the formats of the game? To replicate MSD’s magic is possible, but not so easy. Also, would Kohli be able to live up to the expectations of such a large population of the nation whenever he enters the field. Another shocking news came from the Bollywood Industry on Friday. The industry had lost one of its most versatile and talented actors, Om Puri at an age of 66. Om Puri left for his heavenly abode after a massive cardiac arrest. He was one of the finest actors that the cinema had. His sudden demise has left a huge void behind, which is hard to fill. Whatever roles that were assigned to him, he lived up to the expectations of his directors. The first week of the year was full of surprises, at the end lets hope for the better in the coming weeks.
