Drugs are “evil”, that’s what the general view of people is in India. Drugs mean different things to different communities in India, it means different things to people with different levels of education. A rural uneducated guy will have a different view on drugs whereas a party going everyday clubber living the high life of metropolitan will have a totally different view on drugs.
The youth in the 21st century have majorly turned towards marijuana to be specific cannabis use in all its forms. In fact, the youth today find other people smoking weed or hashish to be totally normal.
The government has tried to curb soft drugs influence in India without much success. Specialists inside the government know the harmful effects of these drugs and the main cause of concern of the government is not weed or charas itself but it is the fact that these drugs are often gateway drugs to hard drugs such as crack, cocaine, heroin, etc.
The state of Punjab has a major drug problem, the government there are struggling to combat it. After British rule, the major cause of worry in Punjab was opium. The main supply of opium in Punjab was from Rajasthan border. After many problems in faced by the government, it banned the Rajasthan route by increasing the security forces to stop the transportation from Rajasthan to Punjab. Even though the clamp down was not felt by the people until 2000. The state in its desperation turned towards worse drugs such as heroin. Heroin is three times as potent as opium and that has led to the major loss of life and increase in heroin use in Punjab.
